Manwood Orchard Almshouses
Client
Sir Roger Manwoods Hospital Trust
Value
£866,000
Provision of ‘Almshouse’ accommodation for those of retirement age and limited financial means on behalf of the Manwood Charitable Trust. The works involve the refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Manwood Hospital (2 existing Almshouses) and construction of 4 new.
The new builds sympathetically mirror the existing buildings to comply with strict planning regulations and preserve the heritage of the site. The design includes features such as English bonded-brickwork to create feature gable ends.
Preservation of the listed wall that surrounds the site was a key consideration amidst construction works.
Woodley Coles established excellent working relations with the local Architectural practice to deliver the Almshouses project.
Careful changes in design through the principles of value engineering allowed the team to preserve the heritage of the site whilst ensuring cost savings were implemented to meet the client's budget.
